Ecosystem of Panna National Park

Flora of Panna

Panna has a wide variety of flora that have amazing ability to adapt in this condition, with a hot and dry climate and shallow soils. It seems like creating a diverse mosaic painting which makes unique habits for the animals to live here.

Dominant Forest Types:

This is the primary vegetation which is classified as the Mix of Deciduous forest along with open grassland. This has the rich dense forests along the banks of River Ken that have cool breezes along. There are also some thorny plants that grow in the arid condition. This makes sure that all animals and plants need to be together as they all are dependent on each other.

Canopy Trees:

The most giant tree found here is Teak which is scientifically called as Tectona grandis. It provides shade to other species like Mahua (Madhuca indica), whose flowers are extracted by the local tribal communities, the Axlewood (Anogeissus latifolia) and the fire-friendly Salai (Boswellia serrata). These trees have significant significance to the ecosystem as they provide shelter, food and shade.

Understory & Shrubs:

Below these big canopy trees, you will get the floor of the forest covered with dense shrubs. Common species include Lantana (Lantana camara), various Grewia species, and the fragrant Night-flowering Jasmine (Nyctanthus arbortristis) whose scent fills the evening air. Here it gives home to small mammals, nests for birds, and also the insects, reptiles to sustain there.

Grasslands:

Here the grass type is hard and the area is covered in grasses like Tangle Grass (Heteropogon contortus), Apluda mutica, and Themeda quadrivalvis. These grass provide food to deer and antelope species. They play an important role in the food web chain that supports tigers and leopards, showcasing every part of flora is essential and vital.

Fauna of Panna

The fauna of Panna is very diverse and is said to be a living example for its richness of carefully protected ecosystem. From the Majestic Bengal Tiger to the smallest bird, life goes on in a complex web of predator and prey where every species plays a crucial role in maintaining the equilibrium of this wild kingdom.

Mammals: The Lords of the Jungle

The very known resident of this park, the Majestic Bengal Tiger rules this land with power and grace. They share the home with other animals like Leopard, Sloth Bear, Wild Dogs and Hyenas acting as efficient scavengers and hunters. Also you can spot Sambar (India's largest deer), the beautifully spotted Chital, and the unique Four-Horned Antelope (Chousingha). In the open plain areas you can see Blue Bull (Nilgai) and Chinkara. Very sightings include the Rusty-Spotted Cat and Indian Fox.

Avian Wonders:

Said to have more than 200 species of birds that fill the air with their voice and the colour throughout the year. The main attractions are White-necked Stork and the high-flying Bar-headed Goose, sharp-eyed raptors like the Honey Buzzard, and dazzling smaller birds like the vibrant Blossom-headed Parakeet and the impossibly elegant Paradise Flycatcher with its long, flowing tail. Panna is also a critical stronghold for scavengers, hosting five different species of vultures that play a vital role in the ecosystem's cleanliness and health.

Reptiles and Aquatic Life:

The Ken River is home to the endangered species like long-snouted Gharial and Mugger crocodile. As the river water is very clean, it has a wide variety of fish and other aquatic species. This aquatic environment is a world in itself linked with life on land as animals come to its banks to drink and hunt that showcases the perfect synergy of Panna's habitats.
